The Hut on Fowl’s Legs

“The Hut on Fowl’s Legs,” is based off of an old folklore story. This story (known as, “Baba Yaga,”) is about a ferocious old woman who eats children. This woman lives in a hut on fowl’s legs and is always found in nature/forest scenes. However, the story is not all this artwork is based off of. In 1874, Modest Mussorgsky, composed, “Pictures at an Exhibition,” which included a song titled, “The Hut on Fowl’s Legs.” This composition was one that I became incredibly fond of during my time in marching band and have very happy memories of. The darkness of this woman with the happiness of my memories of, “The Hut on Fowl’s Legs,” was a great conjunction for me to dabble with. What made this artwork so much fun for me to make was not the focal woman or hut but the fun and quirky characters that are sprinkled throughout.
